A seminar on “Introduction to Leadership: Finding and Reflecting on Your Style” was conducted by Professor Christine Parkin Hughes from the University of Exeter for BBA students. The session aimed to help students understand the concept of leadership, explore different leadership styles, and reflect on their own potential as future leaders. Professor Hughes began the session by defining leadership as the process of influencing and guiding individuals or groups toward achieving common goals. She emphasized that leadership is not confined to authority or position but is rooted in vision, communication, and the ability to inspire others. The seminar explored different types of leaders, including autocratic, democratic, transformational, transactional, and servant leaders. Professor Hughes discussed how each style has its advantages and limitations, and that effective leaders often adapt their approach based on the situation and team dynamics. She also introduced students to various leadership theories such as the Trait Theory, Behavioural Theory, Contingency Theory, and Transformational Leadership Theory. These theories provided a framework for understanding how leaders develop, behave, and succeed in different contexts. An important part of the session focused on key qualities of a good leader, including integrity, empathy, accountability, decisiveness, and emotional intelligence. Professor Hughes encouraged students to engage in self-reflection to identify their personal strengths and areas for improvement as emerging leaders. The seminar concluded with an interactive discussion where students shared their perspectives on leadership experiences in academic and personal settings. Overall, the session was highly informative and inspiring, offering valuable insights into leadership development and encouraging students to cultivate their unique leadership styles for future professional success.
