2nd Special Seminar on Career Building Goals, and Future Endeavors by Washington University of Science and Technology (WUST), Virginia, USA
- Session Date: 17th April 2025
- Session Venue: Lecture Theatre - 1 (LT-1), Jaypee Institute of Information Technology
- Department: Jaypee Business School, JBS
- Speaker: Mr. Soureen Dutta Roy
- Profile of the Speaker:
Mr. Soureen Dutta Roy serves as the Director of Global Marketing and International Relations at Washington University of Science and Technology (WUST), Virginia, USA. With an extensive background in international education and student outreach, Mr. Roy plays a key role in building global partnerships and facilitating cross-border academic opportunities. He has represented WUST at various international platforms and is deeply invested in supporting students looking to expand their academic journeys abroad.
6.Objective:
The objective of the session was to enlighten students about the opportunities and processes involved in pursuing higher education abroad. The session also aimed to provide insights into the advantages of international exposure, discuss key requirements for studying in foreign universities, and share details about WUST and its flexible academic entry system.
7.Key Points Covered:
- Shifting Preferences in International Education:
The speaker highlighted that in recent years, the number of Indian students opting to study abroad has increased significantly, surpassing the numbers from countries like China. The reasons range from geopolitical issues to the growing aspirations of Indian students for global exposure.
?Competitive Landscape:
Mr. Roy noted that Indian colleges often have intense competition for limited seats, whereas many foreign institutions offer broader admission opportunities, making them attractive for students looking to pursue higher education with less stress over entrance cutoffs.
?Preferred Destinations:
The USA remains the most sought-after destination for Indian students, especially after undergraduate studies. Other prominent countries include Canada, Australia, the UK, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
?Profile Building and Holistic Admissions:
He emphasized that foreign colleges assess applicants on more than just academic scores. Factors like Statement of Purpose (SOP), motivation, and extracurricular achievements play a vital role in the selection process. Students must develop a strong overall profile to stand out in the admission process.
?Importance of Adaptability and Lifelong Learning:
Mr. Roy stressed the importance of adaptability and continuous learning. He encouraged students to keep upgrading their skills and knowledge to remain relevant in an
ever-evolving global landscape.
?Entrance Examinations:
Exams such as IELTS and TOEFL are essential for demonstrating English language proficiency. These tests are valid for three years, and students were advised to plan ahead and keep their scores ready as part of the application process.
?Flexible Entry Points:
Unlike Indian institutions which mostly follow a single annual intake, many international universities, including WUST, offer multiple intake options—Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter—giving students greater flexibility in planning their academic careers.
?Global Exposure and Independence:
The speaker concluded by stressing the significance of international education in shaping a student’s personality. Studying abroad enhances independence, improves communication skills, and helps students gain a global perspective, fostering innovation and cross-cultural understanding.
8.Conclusion:
The session was highly informative and engaging, offering students a comprehensive view of the pathway to studying abroad. Mr. Soureen Dutta Roy not only provided a detailed overview of academic procedures and expectations but also motivated students to think beyond traditional education systems. His insights into the benefits of international exposure and the holistic development of students were well-received by the attendees. The event proved to be a valuable experience for all those aspiring to pursue higher education abroad, and it also highlighted the strong academic and cultural values of Washington University of Science and Technology.
